WITCHES, by the Encore Company

Deeply rooted in our collective imagination, the figure of the witch both attracts and repels us.

She is often portrayed as old, ostracized, isolated, a widow, and dangerous, for she brings misfortune.

She is ambivalent, for she also appears as a seductive, bewitching young woman (the word “charm” comes from “carmen,” which means “to bewitch”).

​Witches are part of popular folklore, of entertaining and wondrous legends. Yet many women were once hunted down and burned during the Renaissance (and not in the Middle Ages, as some would have us believe); they were deemed guilty simply because they were accused. The Hammer of Witches: *Malleus Maleficarum*, the handbook for witch hunters written in 1486 by two inquisitors, fueled the fantasy of collective crime.

Through song, music, dance, and personal stories, the Encore Company gives a voice to those who have the power to be “on the sidelines,” on the margins.
